Red Sea Gateway Terminal Takes Delivery of State-of-the-Art Cranes

Three new automated STS Cranes capable of accommodating the largest containerships in the global fleet are the latest additions to RSGT’s expanding infrastructure and presence at Jeddah Islamic Port.

Jeddah, Saudi Arabia – Red Sea Gateway Terminal (RSGT) has taken delivery of three more state-of-the-art remote-controlled Ship-to-Shore (STS) cranes, increasing the facility’s total STS crane count to 24. The new 65-ton twin-lift capacity STS cranes, manufactured by Shanghai-based ZPMC, are able to accommodate the latest generation of Ultra-Large Container Ships (ULCS), with a 70-meter reach, and a 52-meter height. Capable of fully-automated operation, the cranes also feature such additional advanced technology as remote control; Optical Character Scanning capability; chassis alignment and automatic landing systems; vessel profiling, gantry and trolley positioning systems; and intelligent status condition monitoring systems.

“These new STS cranes, and the investment in technology and infrastructure they represent, are just the latest steps in the implementation of our strategic planning, as we continue to expand our world-class services and capabilities here at the logistic hub of the Red Sea Region”, noted RSGT CEO Jens Floe.

The crane deliveries are part of the ongoing investment program of USD $1.7 billion through the year 2050 dedicated to infrastructure, equipment and terminal improvements, which will ultimately increase annual container throughput capacity to 8.8 million TEU, from the current 5.2 million TEU. Similarly advanced units are already in service at RSGT, training for which has included female crane operators, reflecting RSGT’s commitment to an inclusive and diverse workforce and workplace environment.

“Our goal remains to lead by example with world-class service as the largest logistics gateway, and the busiest container terminal, in Saudi Arabia, and on the Red Sea”, said Mr. Floe.
